The Story Behind the Masterpiece

The painting captures one of the most tender moments in the story of Shakuntala and King Dushyanta.

Shakuntala is leaving with her companions Anasuya and Priyamvada, but her thoughts remain with Dushyanta. She bends toward her foot, pretending that a thorn has pricked her, using the gesture as an excuse to turn back and steal another glimpse of him. Her companions understand what she is really doing. 

Ravi Varma turns this small gesture into the emotional centre of the painting. Shakuntala's turned body, her companions and the surrounding forest together create a visual narrative of love, longing and feminine grace.
